I love the way it's written; the fact that you can't rush through it, and you have to pause over each beautiful sentence. And I love the way it sounds in my head!
Laini Taylor's DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE is a close second, beaten only because it has sooo many mentions already.

If I were a lucky winner, either book looks fab :DSBenwellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12546026797439739495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-514984336753021661.post-77775319445707787492011-11-29T23:11:10.217+00:002011-11-29T23:11:10.217+00:00Congrats on your first blogiversary!! My fave book this year is "The Night Strangers" by Chris Bohjalian (although, in fairness, I may be predisposed to liking it because I live in Vermont where the book is set and Chris is a local author whose various writings I often enjoy). Wicked good story. Don't want to say too much because it's fairly new and I despise spoilers. :)Liz (avid reader)noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-514984336753021661.post-17587653783125991802011-11-29T20:12:33.543+00:002011-11-29T20:12:33.543+00:00My favorite read of 2011 was actually a 2010 book....My favorite read of 2011 was actually a 2010 book. It's her second novel and she really is going to be one to watch. The Novel in the Viola is stunning - Natasha's fabulous prose captures the beauty of the 1940s countryside, but it is also a powerfully moving story - the darkness of the holocaust never far away. I say "original" because, although it's modeled on "The Turn of the Screw" it's Henry James with attitude (although that mightn't convey much in itself because it always struck me that attitude wasn't Henry James's outstanding quality). But the language of the girl narrator, who has taught herself to read in furtive visits to the house library ("a dustery of books") is so inventive.

By the way I met Julia Churchill, Sarah Crossan's agent earlier this year (mind you, although she said some nice things about my own MS, she didn't take it up but with hindsight she may have been right). However, it's on account of Julia's glowing account of "The Weight of Water" that I'm entering this competition (also my partner will like it, I hope, because she is Polish).

So, if I don't get a copy of it after all that, I will "wasp your picnic"!Reluctant Irishmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08924572036271783859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-514984336753021661.post-2992146143053945472011-11-29T03:09:32.020+00:002011-11-29T03:09:32.020+00:00Thanks for the giveaway!
